TARNANTHI Talks – Artists from the Spinifex Arts Project

10 October, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Hear from the artists involved with the Spinifex Arts Project in Gallery 24.

Vibrant and large-scale paintings by Spinifex artists are expressions of the individual and the collective. Painted by women and men, the paintings document kinship responsibilities in relation to the land, and evoke ancient ancestral stories using their own contemporary system of signs and symbols. As John Carty writes in the TARNANTHI publication:

‘There is no mistaking a Spinifex painting. Where so much desert art has blurred into gestural abstractions, Spinifex paintings pulse with classical desert forms: the rumbling snakes, skeletal trees, the tracks and shapes of the ancestors… Spinifex artistic practice – founded on conceptual terrain of evidence and identity – is largely expressed through diverse innovations with iconography. This is what sets them apart. And this is what binds them together.’
